Recently, AI and large-model technologies have become hot topics in the tech world. Although these technologies sound esoteric, have they truly changed our daily lives? At the end of May, I went to Taipei to attend the Intel Technology Showcase and interviewed several technical experts there, gaining an in-depth understanding of the latest progress in AI PCs.

Highlight of the Intel Technology Showcase: Lunar Lake
The focus of this technology showcase was Intel's newly released next-generation mobile processor, Lunar Lake. Intel claims that this processor will lead a revolution in AI PCs. At the launch event, Intel expressed high expectations for Lunar Lake, calling it a revolutionary product for AI PCs. However, whether that is really the case still needs to be judged from the product itself.

Major Innovation in Hardware Architecture
Lunar Lake has made major innovations in its hardware architecture. One of the biggest changes is that memory is soldered onto the processor. This design improves memory read efficiency and is especially beneficial for compute modules such as the GPU and NPU, which have extremely high requirements for storage read/write speed. In the past, large AI models performed poorly when run locally due to VRAM efficiency limitations; now this bottleneck has been overcome.

Specifically, integrating memory directly into the processor greatly improves memory read efficiency. The communication efficiency between compute units such as the CPU, GPU, and NPU and memory is greatly enhanced. In particular, for the GPU and NPU—parallel compute modules that require high storage read/write speeds—the tight integration of memory and processor enables them to execute tasks more efficiently. This means that large AI models that were previously limited by VRAM efficiency when running locally can now run more smoothly.

Optimization of Compute Power and Power Consumption
Intel has increased investment in the CPU, GPU, and NPU of Lunar Lake. GPU compute power has increased by 1.5 times, and the NPU's acceleration units have increased from two in the previous generation to six, more than quadrupling compute power. This series of improvements has substantially improved Lunar Lake's performance when running AI applications.

Moreover, soldering memory onto the processor also helps significantly reduce the physical-layer power consumption of compute cores accessing data. Combined with support from TSMC's N3B process, the power consumption of the entire Lunar Lake chip has been reduced by 40%. This not only extends laptop standby time but also provides more ample battery headroom for high-power AI applications. In the future, we may truly be able to have an intelligent assistant on standby 24 hours a day.

Building the AI Ecosystem
Intel is continuously building its own AI software ecosystem. Currently, more than 500 models have been optimized for Core Ultra chips. Intel is also steadily advancing optimization for mainstream AI frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow. In addition, Intel has released a mini PC for AI developers; the processor of this mini PC can be upgraded in the future, providing more possibilities for AI development.

It is worth mentioning that Intel has also invested substantial resources in building its developer ecosystem. They have not only optimized at the hardware level but also done a great deal of work at the software level to ensure that developers can fully leverage Lunar Lake's hardware advantages. For example, Intel provides optimized AI development kits to help developers build and deploy AI models more efficiently.

Practical Application Scenarios
During the lectures and closed-door meetings at the technology showcase, Intel detailed Lunar Lake's practical applications after large models are miniaturized. The compute power of the new XCR GPU has been greatly improved, substantially shortening AI image generation time. For example, when running the same AI generation program, GPU image generation time has been reduced from 13.3 seconds in the previous generation to 6.3 seconds with Lunar Lake, cutting the time in half. The NPU's generation time has been compressed from 22.1 seconds to 5.8 seconds, only a quarter of the original.

These improvements are not only technically significant but also show marked gains in practical applications. For example, in application scenarios requiring efficient image generation, such as image editing and rendering, Lunar Lake's powerful compute can greatly shorten task completion time and improve user experience.

Optimization Focused on User Experience
In applications of large language models, there is a key issue: the first-character problem. This refers to the delay between when a user asks a question and when the AI generates the first character. Intel noticed this issue and made targeted optimizations at the hardware level. The performance of the NPU's data access units has increased by 2 to 4 times, which not only speeds up the generation of the AI's first character but also improves the coherence of subsequent character generation.

While optimizing hardware, Intel has also made corresponding software adjustments to ensure that users can have a smoother experience when using AI applications. By improving NPU access performance, Intel has solved a pain point in large language model applications and greatly improved user experience.

Intel's Strategic Layout
In AI application development, Intel attaches great importance to various open-source frameworks and has shared much of its AI technology accumulation with the community. However, Intel has placed more emphasis on application frameworks such as ONNX. Intel believes that the key to future AI applications lies in small models that are fast, small in size, and low in power consumption. The current focus is to first launch hardware products and build the hardware ecosystem while waiting for breakthroughs in small-model technology.

In exchanges with developers, Intel said that its optimization of mainstream frameworks such as PyTorch is also underway, but ONNX is the current focus. Intel believes that the ultimate form of future AI applications is an intelligent assistant that is fast in computation, low in power consumption, and able to stand by in the computer's background all day. To achieve this goal, Intel is actively building hardware and software ecosystems to ensure that it can quickly implement them when technological breakthroughs occur.

Summary
The Intel Technology Showcase demonstrated Intel's forward-looking layout in the AI PC field. Through Lunar Lake's hardware innovation and software ecosystem construction, Intel is paving the way for the widespread adoption of future AI applications. The intelligent assistant of the future may not be far away, and Intel has already taken an important step on this path.
