How to use Remix mode with Vary (Region)

Vary (Region) This button appears after a Midjourney image has been upscaled.
Vary Region results are determined by the content in the original image, the area you select, and the modified prompt used.
Vary (Region) is compatible with Midjourney model versions V5, V6, niji 5, and niji 6.

How to combine Remix mode with Vary (Region)

1. Enable Remix mode
Use the /settings command and select 🎛️ Remix from the pop-up.

2. Generate an image
Use the /imagine command to create an image.




3. Upscale the image
Use the U buttons to upscale the image you selected.




4. Select a different region
Click the 🖌️ Vary (Region) button to open the editor interface.




5. Select the area to regenerate
Select the free-select tool or rectangle-select tool in the lower-left corner of the editor.
Select the area of the image you want to regenerate.
The size of your selection affects the result. The larger the selection, the more room the Midjourney Bot has to generate new creative details. The smaller the selection, the smaller and more subtle the change.
Note: You cannot edit an existing selection, but you can use the undo button in the upper-right corner to undo multiple steps.




6. Modify the prompt
Use the updated prompt to describe what you want to generate in the selected area. Your revised prompt should focus on the details you want to introduce or change.




7. Submit the job
Click the Submit → button to send your request to the Midjourney Bot. You can now close the Vary Region editor, and you can return to Discord while the job is processed.

Note: You can use the editor button below the upscaled image multiple times to try different selections and prompts.




8. View the results
The Midjourney Bot will process your job and generate a new image grid using information from the original image and guidance from the new prompt.




9. Upscale again and vary the region
You can upscale a new image and then use the Vary Region editor again to continue refining your image.




Vary Region + Remix prompts
The size of your selection affects the result. The larger the selection, the more contextual information the Midjourney Bot has, improving the scale and context of newly added content. However, selecting too much may cause newly generated elements to blend with or replace parts of the original image you want to keep.

Tip: Try using Vary Region + Remix mode to modify the prompt. The prompt should focus on what you want to happen in the selected area. The Midjourney Bot also considers the existing image when generating the selected area, so short, focused prompts are often more effective. Midjourney prompts should not be conversational. Instead of saying “please turn the grassy path into a beautiful stream,” prompt directly with “grassy stream.”

Work step by step: If you want to change multiple parts of an image, work on one part at a time. This way, you can create a targeted prompt for each part.
