Domain verification is the process of confirming that you own a domain in the GPT experience. It helps prevent fraud and unauthorized access, ensure secure communication, manage access controls, and prove content ownership. In OpenAI products, domain verification is required for advanced security features (including single sign-on) and for publishing custom GPTs to the GPT Store.
How OpenAI domain verification works
Currently, domain verification is required in several places: single sign-on (SSO) and the custom GPT builder for non-enterprise customers. Domains are typically verified by adding a specific DNS record (such as a TXT record) to your domain's DNS configuration.
Because domain verification is currently tied to a specific OpenAI organization, once one organization has performed domain verification, other organizations cannot claim the same domain. This means that SSO and builder profiles should be in the same organization with domain verification; otherwise, a domain verified in one organization will prevent users with the same email domain in another organization from signing in or publishing custom GPTs.
Common errors
Your domain could not be verified
First, wait 24 hours to check whether the DNS record has propagated to OpenAI's systems.
If this error still occurs after 24 hours, your domain may already have been verified for SSO purposes in another organization.
If you are verifying the domain as part of a custom GPT builder profile, you need to confirm with your colleagues whether a GPT can be created as part of the company enterprise organization. If you use the GPT builder in another organization, you can still create GPTs, but you cannot publish them to the GPT Store.
"OpenAI is having trouble signing you in. Please take a break and try again"
If your domain has already been verified in another OpenAI organization, this error may occur, preventing all users from signing in to the OpenAI organization you belong to. You can check whether other users also see the same error message. If so, another OpenAI organization already exists and has verified your domain. You can discuss with your IT administrator which organization is best suited for your domain verification. |
