It has an effect, but don't expect it to carry your business right now. Whether it's worth doing depends on two sides: the funnel is already connected and the numbers can be calculated—that's good. But the volume is still very small, and not all categories fit.
First, the results—there is real money coming out of it
July 15 this year was a watershed. Douyin E-commerce officially listed Doubao as an independent transaction channel, and merchants can now separately filter orders that came from Doubao in the backend. Previously, if AI recommended you and the user went elsewhere to place an order, it was unclear who should get the credit. Now at least it's visible.
The data that has come out is roughly like this:
In Fujian, a white porcelain store called Yueji Kiln saw orders from the Doubao channel increase tenfold from July to mid-August, with transaction value up 677% year-on-year. Someone asked Doubao, "What tea set has a more refined feel as a gift for elders?" AI recommended its store, and the user clicked the product card and ordered directly. It wasn't short-video seeding, nor a livestream room—it was an order from a chat box.
The bigger picture: in the first half of 2026, Doubao channel's average daily e-commerce GMV exceeded RMB 10 million, and during 618 it was about RMB 100 million. The click conversion rate for AI-recommended products can reach 3%, higher than the average for traditional feed ads.
There is also a widely circulated case: a merchant got 200 leads from Doubao, closed 99 orders, for a conversion rate of nearly 50%. But this sample is too small; 200 orders are not even a splash on Douyin, so its reference value is limited. Don't treat it as the general level.
But you need to be aware of the difficult parts
First, the volume is too small.
An average of RMB 10 million per day sounds like a lot, but calculate the share: Douyin E-commerce's half-year GMV is RMB 2.4 trillion, and the Doubao channel annualized is about RMB 3.6 billion, less than 0.2%. The RMB 100 million during 618 is also a tiny fraction of the promotion's total. Right now it is just a sprout, not something you can live on as a staple.
Second, not all categories fit.
What works for Doubao commerce is basically "recommendation-type" scenarios: users don't know what they should buy and ask AI to help choose. For example, "what tea set to give elders" or "what to bring for a beginner camping trip." With this kind of demand, AI pushes a product card, and the user clicks it naturally.
But "decision-type" scenarios are awkward. If a user asks, "How is the value for money of this laptop," do you expect AI to analyze it and then push a product card for them to buy? The experience is weird. The user is asking for a judgment, not to purchase. What suits Doubao is "I don't know what to buy, help me choose," not "I already have a target, help me take a look."
Third, you have to pass two gates; it's not just about posting content.
Many people think GEO is just distributing content, building sources, and getting AI to mention you. That is only half right.
For Doubao's product card, the first gate is entering the candidate pool for answers. This depends on the structure of sources across the entire web and on whether AI is willing to mention you in its answer. The second gate is ranking first in e-commerce search. Note that the official wording is ranking first, not "near the top." There is only one card slot; second place equals nothing. This gate tests the fundamentals of Douyin Store operations: title, attributes, experience score, price, fulfillment, and sales.
So GEO does not replace Douyin Store operations; it is an extra entry point on the premise that your operational foundation is passing. If your Douyin Store itself is terrible, just distributing content won't get your card attached.
Whether it's worth doing depends on who you are
If your Douyin Store is already running normally, your product information is reasonably structured, and your category leans toward recommendation type (such as home, gifts, outdoor, daily necessities), then it's worth putting some effort in. Competition hasn't picked up yet. If you get the sources right, write clear scenarios in titles, and fill in all parameters, your probability of being picked up by AI is higher than it will be in six months. The funnel is connected and you can see data in the backend, so at least you can do the math.
If your Douyin Store is newly opened, your experience score hasn't come up yet, and your category is high-consideration (such as digital products, home appliances, and anything requiring extensive parameter comparison), don't pour your energy into this for now. The volume Doubao gives you now can't justify changing a whole set of things specifically for it. First do your Douyin Store well, and wait until Doubao's volume grows more.
One more point: currently, joining the Doubao channel requires a Douyin Store rating of ≥4.5 and no violations. This is the ticket in; if you don't meet it, fix that first.
Moderator's summary
Doubao e-commerce can drive sales, but at this stage it's a snack, not a main meal.
Treat it as an extra, low-cost exposure entry point, and your mindset will be right. Fix the titles, fill in the parameters, and embed scenario keywords; it won't take much effort. If it doesn't bring you volume, you don't lose anything; if it does, it's free money.
But if you listen to some service provider saying "if you don't do Doubao, you'll fall behind," and then spend a large sum of money on it, it's most likely paying tuition. At this stage, just changing your product information yourself is enough. When Doubao's average daily GMV goes from RMB 10 million to several hundred million, it won't be too late to seriously run it as a channel. |
