GEO策略    Does GEO optimization for brand terms actually work? Why is it so hard for brand terms to generate incremental leads?

When many organizations first encounter GEO implementation, their first reaction is to prioritize aggressively targeting their own brand terms, hoping to strengthen the inclusion of brand terms and capture brand exposure in AI answers. Many operations staff also advise clients to focus their content efforts on organization names and proprietary brand terms. However, data from actual implementation shows that focusing solely on GEO brand terms has very limited effect on driving new leads and is not suitable as a core optimization focus.

First, we need to clarify the underlying logic of GEO traffic. The essence of customer acquisition through GEO is to intercept broad-intent inquiry traffic before users have decided which organization to choose. That is, at the stage when users are comparing and screening service providers and do not yet know your brand, they simply state their needs and ask questions; the AI recommends your organization based on content and qualifications, thereby generating inquiry leads. By contrast, users who search for brand terms already know the organization. Whether they come from offline referrals, short videos, or recommendations from existing customers, when users actively search for your brand, it represents existing intent, not new traffic. Even if AI answers display your brand, this mostly serves to verify information and can hardly create new customers out of thin air.

Second, large AI models themselves have clear constraints on outputting brand terms. When answering user questions, AI will not repeatedly and proactively output a particular organization's brand name without reason. If a large amount of content deliberately stuffs organization brand names and forcibly guides the model to output the brand, it is very likely to be judged as hard-sell marketing. Not only is it difficult to achieve the expected exposure effect, but in serious cases it can also reduce the overall content weight and drag down the organic recommendations of the entire GEO project. After many organizations invest a large amount of effort in brand term building in the early stage and run for two or three months, they find almost no new inquiries; this is where the problem lies.

Of course, this is not to say that brand-related information does not need to be handled at all. Basic brand profile development remains essential. We still need to thoroughly organize the basic qualifications, introduction, address, and scope of services of stores or organizations, ensuring that when users actively search for your brand, AI can output an accurate and positive basic introduction. This step is defensive work; its role is to protect reputation and serve existing customers rather than acquire new leads. Never treat basic profile development as the main focus.

In truly effective GEO implementation, the focus should be on industry terms, disease-type terms, demand terms, and question terms. That is, from the perspective of potential customers, identify the questions users would actively ask AI. Continuously produce vertical, practical content around users' pain points, questions, selection criteria, and industry pitfalls to avoid. When users have stated a need but have not yet settled on any organization, that is the golden window for GEO to acquire incremental leads.

From an ROI perspective, if most of the budget and time are spent on brand term optimization, the return on investment will be very unsatisfactory. Even with investment in managed operations, if you blindly and aggressively target brand terms, after the operating cycle ends, the organization will only gain a relatively complete AI brand introduction and will find it difficult to obtain new inquiries. Conversely, by allocating resources to vertical demand-based content, within a three-to-six-month operating cycle you can continuously capture prospects who do not yet know the brand but have intent, bringing in a steady stream of brand-new leads.
